DSAEK Surgery: Procedure, Results, and Expectations

Advanced Corneal Transplant

DSAEK Surgery:
Clearer Vision, Faster Recovery

DSAEK (Descemet’s Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty) is the gold standard for treating corneal swelling. By replacing only the damaged inner layer, we preserve 95% of your natural eye.

Direct WhatsApp: 7880177784

Dr. Amrita Mukherjee - DSAEK Surgeon
Dr. Amrita Mukherjee
Cornea & Transplant Director (LVPEI Alumni)

Why Choose DSAEK?

In the past, corneal transplants required removing the entire cornea and stitching a new one in place. This took over a year to heal.

DSAEK changes everything. We peel away only the diseased inner layer (endothelium) and slide in a healthy donor layer. Because the outer eye is untouched, the eye remains strong and vision recovers in weeks, not years.

.

The Advantage

Traditional Transplant vs. DSAEK

Old Method (PK)

Full Thickness Transplant

  • ❌ Requires 16+ stitches
  • ❌ High astigmatism risk
  • ❌ 12-18 months recovery
  • ❌ Eye becomes weaker

Modern Method (DSAEK)

Partial Thickness Transplant

  • ✔️ No or few stitches
  • ✔️ Minimal astigmatism
  • ✔️ 4-6 weeks recovery
  • ✔️ Eye remains strong

The DSAEK Procedure

A precision surgery performed under local anesthesia.

01

Preparation

The diseased endothelial layer is stripped away from inside the eye through a tiny incision.

02

Insertion

The healthy donor graft is folded and gently inserted into the eye.

03

Air Bubble

An air bubble is injected to press the graft against your cornea, bonding it naturally.

✔️ DSAEK Surgery ✔️ Fuchs' Dystrophy ✔️ Corneal Edema ✔️ Keratoconus

Frequently Asked Questions

It is for patients whose corneal "pump" cells (endothelium) have failed. This is common in Fuchs' Dystrophy or after complicated cataract surgeries (Bullous Keratopathy).
For the first 24 hours, you must lie on your back to let the air bubble hold the graft in place. Vision remains blurry for a few days but clears up significantly within 3-4 weeks.
The risk is much lower with DSAEK (around 8-10%) compared to full transplants (20%). With proper drops and follow-up, the graft can last for many years.

Eye Transplant: What Is Possible, What Is Not, and the Medical Reality

Eye Transplant:
Separating Myth from Reality

Many patients ask for a "whole eye transplant" to restore vision. The medical reality is different—but there is hope. Learn what is possible today.

Why can't we transplant a whole eye?

The eye is connected to the brain by the Optic Nerve, which consists of over 1 million tiny nerve fibers. Once cut, these fibers cannot be reconnected.

However, the front window of the eye—the Corneacan be transplanted successfully. This is what restores vision for millions of people worldwide.

Fig 1: The Cornea (front) is replaceable. The Optic Nerve (back) acts like a cable to the brain and cannot be reconnected yet.

The Medical Facts

What Is Possible Today?

❌ Not Possible

Whole Eye Transplant

Replacing the entire eyeball including muscles and nerve.

  • Cannot reconnect Optic Nerve
  • Cannot restore vision from brain damage
  • Cannot cure Glaucoma blindness
✅ Highly Successful

Cornea Transplant

Replacing the clear front layer (Keratoplasty).

  • Restores vision from corneal scars
  • Treats Keratoconus
  • Fixes swelling (DSAEK/DMEK)
  • Cures Corneal Ulcers

Advanced Solutions Available at SGVEH

We perform the latest organ-preserving surgeries.

Full Cornea Transplant (PK)

Replacing the entire cornea for severe scarring.

Partial Transplant (DALK)

Replacing only the front layers, keeping the eye stronger.

Endothelial Transplant (DMEK)

Replacing only the back layer without stitches.

Frequently Asked Questions

In almost all cases, the doctor means a Cornea Transplant. This is a standard procedure where the cloudy front window is replaced to restore clear vision.
It depends on why they are blind. If blindness is due to a white cornea (scarring), a transplant can restore sight. If blindness is due to nerve damage (Glaucoma) or retina issues, a transplant will unfortunately not help.
It comes from human eye donation. SGVEH has an active eye banking program to ensure donor tissue is available for patients in need.

What is a Cornea Transplant?

The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped window at the front of your eye. It focuses light to let you see clearly. When the cornea becomes cloudy due to injury, infection, or disease (like Keratoconus), vision is lost.

A transplant replaces this cloudy window with a clear one. Today, we don't always replace the whole cornea. We often replace just the damaged layers.

Fig 1: A cloudy cornea blocks light, while a transplant restores transparency.

Modern Techniques

Types of Cornea Transplants

We choose the technique based on which layer of your cornea is damaged.

1. Full Thickness (PK)

Penetrating Keratoplasty

Used when all layers of the cornea are damaged. The entire cornea is replaced. Requires stitches.

2. Front Layer (DALK)

Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty

Used for Keratoconus or scars. We replace only the front layers. The patient's own inner layer is kept intact. Safer & Stronger.

3. Back Layer (DMEK/DSAEK)

Endothelial Keratoplasty

Used for corneal swelling (Fuchs' Dystrophy). We replace only the thin back layer. No stitches & Fast recovery.

The Procedure: Step-by-Step

01

Evaluation

Advanced imaging (AS-OCT, Pentacam) to measure corneal thickness and health.

02

Tissue Matching

We source high-quality donor tissue from verified eye banks.

03

Surgery

Performed under local anesthesia (painless). Takes 45-90 minutes.

04

Recovery

Eye patch for 1 day. Drops for a few months. Regular follow-ups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Corneal transplants have one of the highest success rates of all organ transplants (over 90% for conditions like Keratoconus). Success depends on the specific disease and follow-up care.
The cost varies depending on the technique (DALK vs PK vs DMEK) and the type of donor tissue used. We offer transparent, cost-effective packages. Please contact us for an estimate.
No. The surgery is performed under local anesthesia, so the eye is numb. You might feel mild irritation or a "scratchy" sensation for a few days after surgery, which is normal.
Wait times have reduced significantly. At SGVEH, we have strong networks with eye banks to ensure timely availability of tissue for our patients.

Quick answers written in a featured-snippet style. Need guidance?

The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped front surface of the eye. It protects the eye and helps focus light, contributing significantly to clear vision. Any damage, infection, or scarring in the cornea can reduce vision.
A corneal transplant is a surgery where a damaged or cloudy cornea is replaced with healthy donor corneal tissue. It is performed to restore vision, reduce pain, and improve corneal clarity when the cornea is severely diseased.
It may be needed for corneal scarring, advanced keratoconus, corneal swelling due to endothelial failure, non-healing corneal ulcers, corneal dystrophies, or severe infections and injuries that permanently affect corneal clarity.
DALK, DSAEK, and DMEK are modern layer-by-layer corneal transplant techniques. DALK replaces the front corneal layers, while DSAEK and DMEK replace the inner endothelial layer. These procedures often offer faster recovery and targeted treatment.
Keratoconus is when the cornea becomes thin and bulges outward, causing distorted vision. Treatment may include glasses, contact lenses, collagen cross-linking (C3R), and in advanced cases, corneal transplant.
C3R strengthens the cornea and slows or stops keratoconus progression. It helps preserve vision and may reduce the need for corneal transplant in many patients.
Amniotic membrane grafting uses a biological membrane to help heal the ocular surface. It is used for non-healing corneal ulcers, chemical injuries, severe inflammation, and surface disorders to reduce scarring and promote healing.
Recovery depends on the transplant type. Vision may improve in weeks, while full stabilization can take months. Regular follow-ups and strict use of prescribed drops are essential for best outcomes.
Symptoms include redness, pain, watering, light sensitivity, blurred vision, foreign body sensation, and persistent irritation. Sudden pain with reduced vision can be an emergency and needs urgent evaluation.

What Is a Cataract?

A cataract develops when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy. This clouding blocks light from passing clearly through the lens, resulting in blurred vision, reduced contrast, and difficulty performing daily activities.

Cataracts are most commonly related to aging, but they may also occur due to diabetes, eye injury, prolonged steroid use, smoking, or excessive exposure to UV light.

Early Symptoms of Cataract

Blurred or Cloudy Vision

Objects may appear hazy, foggy, or unclear even with glasses.

Glare and Light Sensitivity

Bright lights, sunlight, or vehicle headlights may cause discomfort.

Poor Night Vision

Difficulty driving or seeing clearly in low-light conditions.

Frequent Glasses Change

Repeated need to change spectacle power within short intervals.

Faded or Yellowish Colors

Colors may appear dull, less vibrant, or yellow tinted.

Double Vision in One Eye

Seeing double images when using one eye alone.

“Early detection of cataract allows surgery to be planned at the right time, leading to safer procedures and excellent vision results.”

Do You Notice These Symptoms?

If you are experiencing any early signs of cataract, do not delay. A timely eye examination can prevent further vision loss.

Frequently Asked Questions – Early Cataract Symptoms

What are the early symptoms of cataract?

Early cataract symptoms include blurred vision, glare from lights, difficulty seeing at night, frequent changes in glasses power, and faded colors.

Is blurred vision always due to cataract?

No. Blurred vision can also be caused by refractive errors, dry eyes, or retinal problems. An eye examination is required to confirm cataract.

Does cataract cause pain?

No. Cataract is painless. Pain, redness, or sudden vision loss indicates another eye condition and requires urgent care.

Can cataract be treated without surgery?

No. Cataract cannot be cured with medicines or eye drops. Surgery is the only permanent treatment.

When should I see an eye doctor?

You should see an eye specialist if cataract symptoms interfere with daily activities such as reading, driving, or work.

Squint in Children (Strabismus) — Early Detection, Right Treatment & Better Vision Development

  • ✅ Treatment plan squint type + cause
  • ✅ SGVEH में child-friendly evaluation + counseling available

WhatsApp: 7880177784 • Appointment + professional guidance

How squint affects a child’s vision

Goal of treatment: Alignment + vision development + depth perception (3D vision) को protect करना।

Early signs parents should notice

  • Head tilt / face turn

Common causes of squint in children

Glasses Number (Refractive Error)

Weak Vision in One Eye

Muscle Control / Development

Child Squint Evaluation & Treatment at SGVEH

1

Complete Evaluation

Squint type (in/out/up/down), frequency, vision in both eyes, and refractive error measured.

2

Non-Surgical Treatment

Glasses, patching/amblyopia therapy, और selected cases में supervised vision therapy.

3

Surgery (When Indicated)

Parents guidance: Treatment success का एक बड़ा हिस्सा follow-up और patching/glasses compliance पर depend करता है।

Squint Eye Exercises – Do They Really Work? (Truth + Right Treatment Plan)

  • ✅ “One exercise fits all” = myth
  • ✅ SGVEH में complete squint evaluation के बाद right plan मिलता है

WhatsApp: 7880177784 • Professional guidance + appointment support

Read FAQs →

Do squint exercises really work?

When exercises may help (selected cases)

  • Convergence insufficiency: near work

When exercises usually won’t fix squint

Constant squint (always visible)

Childhood squint + lazy eye risk

Nerve-related / sudden onset adult squint

SGVEH Approach: Right Diagnosis → Right Treatment

Evaluation में alignment measurement, vision/refraction (glasses check), binocular vision assessment और जरूरत पड़ने पर related work-up शामिल हो सकता है।

1

Diagnosis (Type + Cause)

Squint का type (in/out/up/down), frequency (constant/intermittent), और cause identify किया जाता है।

2

Treatment Options

Glasses correction, patching/amblyopia therapy, prism, selected cases में vision therapy, और surgery when indicated।

3

Follow-up & Outcomes

Progress monitoring, child vision development support, और realistic expectations के साथ structured follow-up।

FAQs: Squint Exercises

Best approach: diagnosis-first.

  • ✅ SGVEH में complete evaluation + personalized plan available

Squint (Strabismus)

Common Symptoms (बच्चों और adults में)

  • Double vision (विशेषकर adults में)
  • Headache, eye strain, reading

(Causes & Risk Factors)

Refractive Error

Muscle / Nerve Control

Childhood Vision Development

Early childhood में binocular vision develop होता है—यही period squint treatment के लिए most important है।

What are Corneal Diseases & Problems?

Cornea Care at SGVEH

Surgical Options (When Needed)

Significant scarring, corneal failure, या advanced disease में surgeon-guided corneal transplant planning.

When should you visit a Cornea Specialist?

Redness + Pain

Persistent redness, burning, foreign-body sensation, या sharp pain.

Vision Drop / Blur

Photophobia / Watering

Cornea FAQs (Quick Answers)

Is a corneal ulcer serious?

Can I use leftover eye drops at home?

When is corneal transplant needed?

What should I do after an eye injury?
